HBOT for post-lip filler complications and recovery

Other Medical Conditions and HBOT | Published: November 3rd 2025, 02:07PM

What to know about HBOT’s role in treating rare post-lip filler infection or inflammation

Lip fillers have become one of today’s most popular cosmetic treatments, helping people enhance their natural shape and achieve a fuller, more defined smile. Most treatments are quick, safe, and have minimal downtime; some mild swelling or tenderness may occur for a day or two, which is normal.

However, in rare cases, complications can occur when a blood vessel is accidentally compressed or blocked by filler. This can reduce blood flow, causing pain, color changes, or even tissue damage if not treated promptly. In these situations, hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) may be used in conjunction with standard care to help restore oxygen to the affected area and support healing.

Continue reading to learn how HBOT works, when it’s recommended, and what to expect during post-lip filler treatment.

What is HBOT?

HBOT is a medical treatment where you breathe 100 percent oxygen in a pressurized chamber. This increases the amount of oxygen your blood carries and helps deliver it to injured or low-flow tissues. In cosmetic complications, clinicians use HBOT as an add-on to the primary treatment to improve oxygenation, reduce swelling, and support healing. [1]

When is HBOT considered after lip-filler?

HBOT may be recommended when your clinician suspects reduced blood flow or when there is tissue at risk after treatment. It is also sometimes used when infection or significant inflammation is present. Evidence from case reports and small series shows HBOT can help in these scenarios, especially when combined with the standard first-line steps your injector takes. [1]

How HBOT can help as part of post-treatment

  • Improves oxygen delivery to areas with reduced blood flow.
  • Helps limit tissue loss and supports wound recovery in ischemic complications after fillers.
  • It can be useful across filler types, including temporary and permanent fillers, when occlusion is suspected.

What to expect if your provider recommends HBOT

Your hyperbaric physician will review your medical history and the details of your filler appointment, then coordinate with your injector or surgeon. HBOT sessions are typically scheduled daily at a pressure set by the physician. Case reports in the literature have used daily 90-minute sessions at 2.0 to 2.4 ATA for 1 to 2 weeks, and some complex cases required more sessions. The exact plan is tailored to your exam and response. [1]

Results you can expect

Every case is different, and timing matters. Published reports describe good recovery even when HBOT began several days after the event, although earlier treatment is ideal. Healing can include improved skin color, reduced pain, and healthy tissue recovery as blood flow returns. Your team will track capillary refill, color changes, and symptoms to guide next steps.
