HBOT and Crohn’s disease: How hyperbaric oxygen therapy can help with your treatment and remission

Digestive Conditions | Published: February 19th 2021, 11:25AM

Learn how HBOT can help people living with Crohn’s disease reduce flare-ups and treat symptoms

It’s estimated that between 1.6 and 3.1 million people in the United States suffer from some form of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) which affects the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, leading to ongoing symptoms and complications. [1]

While there is no known cause or cure, it’s important for people with IBD to find effective treatment options that lessen or eliminate their symptoms.

What is Crohn’s disease?

Crohn’s disease is a lifelong form of IBD that inflames and irritates the GI tract. It can emerge at any age and affects men, women, and children, but it typically appears in younger people.

There are different types of Crohn’s disease that each affect different sections of the digestive tract, but it most commonly affects the end of the small bowel (ileum) and the beginning of the colon. [2]

What are the symptoms of Crohn’s disease?

Those with Crohn’s disease usually experience flare-ups (periods of severe symptoms) followed by remission (periods of no or very mild symptoms) for varying, unpredictable lengths of time.

There is no way to predict flare-ups, but symptoms can include anything from abdominal pain and chronic diarrhea to anal fissures/fistulas and rectal bleeding. [3]

What are the treatment options for Crohn’s disease?

Healthcare providers traditionally recommend various types of medications, bowel rest, special diets, and/or surgery as treatment options for Crohn’s disease depending on what’s causing the symptoms and their severity. [3]

While there is no cure, the goal of Crohn’s disease treatment is to induce remission and prevent any complications of the disease overtime, so that the patient can maintain a normal, active lifestyle.

How can hyperbaric oxygen therapy help with Crohn’s disease treatment?

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is an effective form of Crohn’s disease treatment as proven by multiple studies on HBOT and Crohn’s disease.

A systematic review of hyperbaric oxygen therapy treatment for IBD analyzed thirteen studies of HBOT in Crohn’s disease and found that 78% of the patients with Crohn’s disease had clinical improvements with HBOT. [4]

HBOT has been shown to help those with Crohn’s disease by:

  • Increasing oxygen delivery to the body and reducing overall inflammation
  • Alleviating pain
  • Supporting faster wound and fistula healing
  • Reducing mental and physical stress
  • Enhancing the effect of and reducing the need for medications
  • Improving the elimination of toxins
  • Eliminating bacteria and infection. [5]

Overall, hyperbaric oxygen therapy works as Crohn’s disease treatment by lessening the severity of symptoms experienced by the patient and improving their overall quality of life.

How we can help

At Hyperbaric Healing Treatment Center, we’ve seen great success in treating both children and adults with a variety of digestive conditions, including Crohn’s disease, Gastritis, Gastroenteritis, Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and IBD.

“I treated a gentleman from The Villages with severe Crohn’s disease that had great results with just 10 treatments,” shares Erika Jordan, founder of Hyperbaric Healing Treatment Center. “He returned two and a half years later for maintenance dives and stated he has not had any problems or need for medication since he dove with us last.”

We’d like to share the story of the mother of one of our patients who used HBOT for Crohn’s disease treatment:

“My 10 year old son was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease. Instead of going the route of Remicade, we had heard positive experiences with HBOT from individuals we personally knew, and decided there was no harm in giving this a try, as there isn’t the risk that you have from extreme medication treatments etc. Especially for a child who was already immune suppressed from a liver transplant and dealing with multiple other medical issues. After just under 2 months of fundraising, we were able to purchase the 40 “dive” package that had the biggest discount available.

Both my son & I were processed for the evaluation, and once our medical records and doctor approval went through, we were good to go and just amazed at the above and beyond kindness at this location!!

After dive #4 I noticed we BOTH slept better, had more energy, and my muscles were relaxed like a massage. By #15 we had weaned off 2 medications for GI. Cramps were almost gone completely! We are over 2 months post treatment and my son is STILL doing exceptionally well and off a 3rd medication (Budesonide) now.”
