Brazilian Butt Lift: How HBOT can help with BBL recovery
Learn why hyperbaric oxygen therapy is recommended for recovery by leading plastic surgeons after undergoing the popular cosmetic procedure
In the past two decades, there has been a 112% increase in buttock lift cosmetic surgical procedures, more commonly known as Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) surgery. [1]
Most often undergone by women, Brazilian Butt Lifts are often desired to enhance curves of the lower body, give a more youthful shape to the butt, and improve overall bodily proportions.
Although Brazilian Butt Lifts have become more commonplace in recent years, it is still a serious cosmetic surgery with risks and BBL recovery protocols must be thoroughly understood before undergoing the procedure.
What is BBL surgery?
BBL surgery is a very popular plastic surgery procedure that involves specialized fat transfer from various locations of the body such as the hips, abdomen or thighs and injecting it back into the buttocks to augment their size and shape without implants.
If a BBL procedure is performed by a skilled, board-certified plastic surgeon, the final result should last many years and include improved proportions of the entire lower body as well as fat loss in common “problem areas” in addition to the desired enhanced buttocks. [2]
Is the BBL surgery safe?
As with any surgical procedure, a Brazilian Butt Lift comes with potential side effects, but it’s often cited as carrying fewer risks than other surgeries.
The most common side effects include:
- Infection
- Scarring
- Pain
- Lumps under the skin where the fat grafts were suctioned or injected
- Loss of skin in the treated area due to deep infection
- Fat embolism in the heart or lungs. [3]
Many of the common minor side effects such as infection, scarring and pain can be minimized or eliminated with the right recovery treatments during the healing process.

How long does it take to recover from a Brazilian Butt Lift?
The recovery process after a Brazilian Butt Lift is extremely important for the long-term success of the procedure.
Although pain can be controlled through pain medication, patients must avoid sitting or laying directly on their butt for about two weeks after surgery. Once approved by the cosmetic surgeon, patients can then sit in a modified position that avoids direct pressure on the buttocks. Typical sitting activities can be resumed within an average of eight weeks during the recovery period.
If all instructions are followed correctly, patients can usually resume light daily activities within a week of surgery, but it typically takes nearly two weeks post-op until they can go back to work.
How can hyperbaric oxygen therapy help with BBL recovery?
Many leading plastic surgeons are now recommending the use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy in conjunction with Brazilian Butt Lift procedures to eliminate the most common minor side effects and accelerate the recovery process.
Utilizing HBOT after a BBL procedure has been shown to:
- Dramatically reduce swelling, bruising and pain
- Reduce the need for post-procedural pain medications, and
- Reduce the amount of time the patient needs to take off of work.
