Chronic bone infections can be stubborn, painful, and very difficult to treat. Even with surgery and strong antibiotics, some infections persist or recur. In fact, there are over 50,000 hospital admissions of patients with chronic refractory osteomyelitis every year. [1] When that happens, doctors may recommend hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) as an additional treatment to support healing.

What is chronic refractory osteomyelitis?

Osteomyelitis is an infection in the bone. It usually happens when bacteria, most often Staphylococcus aureus, reach the bone through the bloodstream, after an injury or surgery, or from a nearby infected wound. 

When the infection persists for an extended period, recurs, or fails to improve despite appropriate surgery and antibiotics, it is often referred to as chronic refractory osteomyelitis. In simple terms, this means a long-lasting bone infection that has proven difficult to cure, even after standard treatments have been tried.

Symptoms of osteomyelitis may include:

• Swelling, warmth, and tenderness over the area of the infection
• Pain near the infection
• Tiredness
• Fever

Sometimes osteomyelitis causes no symptoms. When it does cause symptoms, they may be due to other conditions. This may be especially true for infants, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems. [2] 

People at higher risk include those who have:

• Diabetes, especially with foot ulcers
• Poor circulation or peripheral arterial disease
• Prior bone surgery, fractures, or orthopedic hardware
• Weakened immune systems

Without effective treatment, chronic refractory osteomyelitis can lead to ongoing pain, nonhealing wounds, and, in severe cases, the need for amputation.

Why are chronic bone infections so challenging to treat?

Bone is not as richly supplied with blood as some other tissues. Once bacteria settle there, several problems can develop:

• Reduced blood flow and low oxygen levels in the affected bone
• Scar tissue and dead bone, which block antibiotics from reaching the infection
• Ongoing inflammation, swelling, and damage to nearby tissue

Standard care usually includes surgical cleaning of the infected area, removal of dead bone, and long courses of targeted antibiotics. Even so, recurrence rates for chronic osteomyelitis remain significant, which is why additional therapies are sometimes needed. [3]

Benefits of hyperbaric oxygen therapy for chronic refractory osteomyelitis

Research suggests that adding HBOT to surgery and antibiotics can improve outcomes for many patients with chronic refractory osteomyelitis. Several reviews and clinical reports describe remission or long-term control in roughly 75 to 85 percent of patients when HBOT is used alongside culture-directed antibiotics and appropriate surgery. [3]

1. Raises oxygen levels in infected bone

Chronic infections often create areas of bone that are poorly supplied with blood and oxygen. HBOT dramatically increases the amount of oxygen carried in the blood, which allows more oxygen to reach infected bone and surrounding tissues. This improved oxygen environment helps:

• Support white blood cells as they attack bacteria
• Slow the growth of bacteria that prefer low oxygen conditions
• Improve the local environment so healing can begin

2. Helps antibiotics work more effectively

Some antibiotics work better when there is adequate oxygen. Higher oxygen levels can improve the penetration of these medications into tissues and their interaction with bacteria. When HBOT is combined with properly chosen antibiotics, studies suggest better infection control than with medications alone.

3. Encourages new blood vessels and better circulation

Long-term infection and inflammation can damage small blood vessels in bone and soft tissue. HBOT has been shown to stimulate the growth of new capillaries, a process called angiogenesis. Over time, this can improve circulation in the treated area and support more durable healing.

4. Supports bone repair and tissue healing

By improving oxygen delivery, HBOT can support cells that rebuild bone and soft tissue. This helps the body fill in areas of bone loss and repair damaged tissue after surgery. Better tissue quality around the infection site can also reduce the risk of wound reopening.

5. May lower the risk of serious complications

In high-risk situations, such as diabetic foot infections that involve bone, adding HBOT has been associated with better wound healing and a lower risk of major amputation in some studies, primarily when used as part of a coordinated treatment approach.

Overview

For more than two years, Joe lived with the devastating effects of a traumatic brain injury and spinal cord injury. Nonverbal and unable to move the right side of his body, he faced immense challenges in daily life. Despite ongoing occupational, speech, and physical therapy, his progress had plateaued.

Life before HBOT

Before starting HBOT, Joe was nonverbal and unable to recognize or move the right side of his body—a condition known as “right neglect.” His wife recalls how limited his quality of life was: “He wasn’t able to do anything… therapy helped, but it only went so far”

Finding Hyperbarics Orlando

Nina first heard about HBOT through a Facebook ad that highlighted a clinical trial for patients with brain injuries. Encouraged by their physician and supported through workers’ compensation, they connected with Hyperbaric Healing Treatment Center. Nina explained: “From everything I’d seen, it seemed like an up-and-coming treatment to try to help traumatic brain injuries.”

Although there was some fear of the unknown, Nina decided to move forward: “Even if there’s a little bit of nervousness in the beginning, at least try it.”

Treatment experience

The first session was difficult, as Joe was nervous and unsure of what to expect. But by the second session, everything changed. “Literally amazing,” Nina described. Joe was calmer, more comfortable, and even began enjoying movies and music during treatments.

Nina praised the attentive staff: “I’m impressed that you have two people in there monitoring all the chambers. When he’s relaxed, I’m relaxed.” She called the overall experience “above, top-notch, phenomenal.”

Outcomes

The results of Joe’s HBOT journey have been nothing short of extraordinary:

• Restored movement: After two years without function, Joe began moving the fingers of his right hand. Soon after, his right arm and leg also began responding.

• Improved speech: Joe has started mouthing words, nodding yes or no, and even saying short phrases, such as “I love you.”

• Emotional engagement: Joe now shows facial expressions and reacts to conversations with his wife.

• Daily life progress: After six months of not eating normally, Joe was able to enjoy a full meal again.

Nina shared: “We want more. We want to keep coming back to keep getting the treatments.” She also noted how staff treat her husband with compassion: “It’s so nice that he’s treated with dignity and respect, regardless of what’s going on with him.”

HBOT has also changed her outlook on the future: “More people need to know about this. It can definitely change a lot of people’s lives for the better.”

Breast cancer continues to affect far too many lives each year. It is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, and it impacts families and communities everywhere. Supporting those fighting the disease and the researchers working toward new treatments and a cure is more important than ever.

Breast cancer accounts for 1 in 3 of all new female cancers each year, and the American Cancer Society estimates that in the U.S. in 2024: 

• About 316,950 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women. 
• About 59,080 new cases of ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) will be diagnosed.  
• About 42,170 women will die from breast cancer. [1]

At Hyperbaric Healing Treatment Center, we have seen firsthand how breast cancer affects patients, loved ones, and survivors. That is why we have proudly participated in the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk every year since 2019. In 2025, we are showing up once again.

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is an initiative started by the American Cancer Society with the goal of ending breast cancer as it exists today by uniting communities (like Orlando), companies (like Hyperbaric Healing Treatment Center), and individuals (like YOU!) 

What?

This year, we invite you to participate in the 28th Annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of Orlando presented by AdventHealth. The event (along with similar ones across the country) raises money to fund innovative research, provide free information and support, and help people reduce their breast cancer risk or find it early when it’s most treatable.

As we’ve done the past few years, we’re building a team for the Making Strides of Orlando event. Our very own Erika Jordan, hyperbaric director and founder of Hyperbaric Healing Treatment Center, is also the logistics chair for the Making Strides of Orlando committee this year, following a successful tenure in this role in past years. We invite you to join us by walking alongside us to fundraise or donate to our Hyperbaric Healing team.

Where and when?

If you’d like to walk with us, the event takes place on Saturday, October 25, 2025, with opening ceremonies at 7:00 a.m. and the walk beginning at 9:00 a.m. at the Northeast Corner of Lake Eola Park (566 E. Robinson St., Downtown Orlando).

While the opening ceremonies are optional, they’re a lot of fun! They include entertainment, survivor celebrations and gifts, team activities, sponsor tents, refreshments, giveaways, and more.

Meet Erika Jordan, the founder of the Hyperbaric Healing Treatment Center. Erika is a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer who has completed her studies at the Cambridge College of Healthcare & Technology located in Delray Beach. Subsequently, she acquired further qualifications, including an Emergency Medical Technician degree from Palm Beach State College, and a Hyperbaric Specialist certification from the American Board of Wound Healing.

The Start

When Erika first encountered hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), it profoundly transformed her understanding of healing. She discovered that HBOT offers a gentle yet powerful approach that increases the body’s natural ability to repair itself, often producing outcomes that surprise even experienced medical professionals. Seeing patients recover from complex, life-changing conditions such as radiation injuries, brain trauma, and chronic wounds inspired Erika to dedicate herself to expanding access to this transformative therapy.

Level-headed

Erika believes in staying grounded in purpose, perspective, and presence. She stays connected to what truly matters by focusing on the meaningful impact hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) has on patients, and by keeping in mind the example she hopes to set for her daughters. That deep sense of responsibility helps her stay aligned with her core values. She also carves out time for reflection, sets boundaries around work whenever possible, and prioritizes moments of joy, whether at the office or with her family. These daily habits enable Erika to lead with clarity, even during the busiest times.

HBOT centers function under a patient-centered philosophy that extends much beyond clinical metrics. HBOT offers a more personalized and welcoming experience, where patients genuinely feel acknowledged and supported. In contrast to hospital programs, which are constrained by rigid protocols and insurance guidelines, HBOT collaborates closely with patients and referring providers to tailor care plans.

“Our team also fosters an atmosphere that resembles a healing community rather than a medical institution, all while maintaining clinical excellence and safety,” states Erika.

Developing Competencies within the New Team

The process begins with the recruitment of individuals who possess a genuine passion for healing. Subsequently,  under Erika’s leadership, HBOT closely mentors each new team member, integrating practical training with instruction on the scientific principles underlying HBOT and its effects. Furthermore, HBOT fosters a culture centered on empathy and effective communication.

“The team understands that a kind word, a listening ear, or a reassuring presence is just as critical to healing as any protocol,” adds Erika.

Misconception vs. Actual Truth

Erika points out a common misconception that hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is only used for divers or wound care. In reality, even many healthcare professionals are unaware of HBOT’s broader therapeutic potential, which includes reducing inflammation, regenerating tissue, improving circulation, and supporting recovery in neurological and post-radiation cases. Another frequent misunderstanding is that HBOT is still considered experimental. In fact, it is a well-researched, FDA-approved treatment for multiple conditions and is increasingly being integrated into advanced care programs across the country.

Erika envisions a future where the next generation understands that healing is both a science and an art. Through HBOT’s internship program, participants gain hands-on experience in compassionate care, integrative medicine, and collaborative leadership. Gaining Traction in Mainstream Healthcare

Erika envisions integrative therapies playing a greater role in whole-person care. Patients today are looking beyond symptom relief; they are seeking recovery, resilience, and an improved quality of life. “I believe as more providers become educated and as more success stories come to light, integrative treatments will no longer be considered ‘alternative,’ they’ll be standard.”

The Long-Term Vision

“Our long-term vision includes growing access by expanding to more communities. We are currently in the process of opening our third location and continuing to raise awareness about HBOT’s potential,” explains Erika.

Under her leadership, HBOT aims for the centers to establish a gold standard in outpatient healing environments where innovation is combined with compassion. Erika also envisions expanding collaborations with other providers and organizations that align with the mission of patient-centered care.

The Future Roadmap

Erika aspires to witness a healthcare system in which access to advanced healing therapies, such as HBOT, is not constrained by diagnosis codes or insurance limitations. She imagines a future in which patients receive holistic treatment, with equal emphasis placed on emotional, physical, and neurological recovery. This future is characterized by proactive, integrative care that is fundamentally grounded in empathy.
