Breast cancer continues to affect patients, survivors, families, and loved ones throughout our community. In 2026, the American Cancer Society estimates that approximately 321,910 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women in the United States, along with 60,730 cases of ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS). An estimated 42,140 women will die from breast cancer this year. [1]

At Hyperbaric Healing Treatment Center, this mission is especially close to our hearts. We have the privilege of caring for patients who are healing from the lasting effects of cancer treatment, including radiation injuries, and their strength and resilience remind us every day why continued support matters.

This year marks our ninth year supporting Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, and we’re once again inviting our patients, families, friends, and community to walk alongside us, join our team, or support our fundraising efforts.

Who?

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is an American Cancer Society movement that brings communities together to support breast cancer survivors, patients, caregivers, and families while raising funds for breast cancer research and patient support.

For three decades, Making Strides events across the country have created a place for communities to come together in hope, support, and action.

What?

The Hyperbaric Healing Treatment Center team is once again coming together for the Orlando Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk.

This year, our commitment continues to grow. Our founder and hyperbaric director, Erika Jordan, is now serving as the Event Experience Chair for the 30th-anniversary event in October.

With nearly 150 walks taking place across the country, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer has grown into a powerful national movement. These walks bring together survivors, people living with metastatic breast cancer, caregivers, families, businesses, and supporters united in the fight against breast cancer. [2]

A few highlights from Erika’s involvement so far in preparation for the main event:

• Represented ACS at an Orange County Sheriff’s Office wellness event, helping share the Making Strides mission and connect with the community.
• Helped with the Kickoff setup and event, and gave the farewell message to the 349 attendees. 
• Obtained donations for the Kickoff Chance Drawings from local businesses, including Cooper’s Hawk, First Watch, The Celeste Hotel/Resort, Fun Spot America, and Hyperbaric Healing Treatment Center.
• Checked in guests at Dr. Anu Saigal’s Pearls with a Purpose Brunch at The Alfond Inn.
• Attended the Corporate Breakfast as a table host and was featured on the big screen.
• HHTC was also an in-kind donor for our Portraits of Hope Ambassadors. We had the privilege of pampering the survivors with a dose of the best natural medicine: oxygen! 

Our team has also officially launched the HHTC Making Strides team for 2026, inviting staff, patients, friends, and supporters to join us in fundraising and walking for this important cause.

In addition, HHTC is proud to sponsor all three mile-marker signs along the 3-mile walk route, helping encourage participants every step of the way.

The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) estimates that 10 to 25 percent of adults experience tinnitus, and for many it becomes a long-term companion. [1]

Tinnitus is a symptom, not a disease of its own

Tinnitus is the perception of sound with no external source. It is often described as ringing, but it can also sound like buzzing, hissing, clicking, or roaring, in one ear or both.

One point worth clearing up: tinnitus itself is not a condition. It is a symptom of something else going on, frequently in the inner ear. Common contributors include:

• Age-related and noise-related hearing loss
• Inner ear damage or blocked earwax
• Problems with blood flow near the ear
• Sudden hearing loss (more on this below)

Mayo Clinic notes that severe tinnitus can interfere with hearing but does not itself cause hearing loss. Because the noise so often points to an underlying issue, identifying and treating that root cause is where real relief usually begins. [2]

Why oxygen enters the conversation

Your inner ear needs a lot of oxygen, but it gets very little blood flow of its own. So when oxygen runs low, the tiny structures that handle your hearing can start to struggle.

That is where hyperbaric oxygen comes in. Inside a hyperbaric chamber, you breathe pure oxygen at increased pressure, which loads your blood with far more oxygen than usual and helps deliver it to tissues that are running short. The Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS) points to the same idea for the ear: after a sudden inner-ear injury, oxygen levels there drop, and hyperbaric oxygen can help restore them. [3]

How hyperbaric oxygen fits into tinnitus care

Because tinnitus is so often tied to an inner ear that is not getting enough oxygen, hyperbaric oxygen therapy has become a natural treatment to explore. The idea is simple: if low oxygen is part of the problem, delivering more oxygen may help support the inner ear as it recovers.

That connection is strongest in one specific situation. Tinnitus frequently appears alongside sudden hearing loss, a fast, unexplained drop in hearing that doctors treat as an emergency. When ringing arrives with a sudden hearing change, HBOT has real backing:

• In 2011, UHMS added sudden hearing loss to its list of approved uses for hyperbaric oxygen. [3]
• In 2019, the American Academy of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS) said doctors may offer HBOT along with steroids within two weeks of onset, or as rescue treatment within one month. [4]

In short, when tinnitus is a sign of a recent inner ear injury, hyperbaric oxygen is a recognized part of the response.

Myth: HBOT is only for scuba divers.
Fact: While HBOT is the standard treatment for decompression sickness (the condition divers call “the bends”), it treats far more than that. The FDA has approved HBOT for more than a dozen conditions, including diabetic foot ulcers, chronic non-healing wounds, radiation tissue damage, serious infections, carbon monoxide poisoning, and compromised skin grafts.

Myth: HBOT is dangerous.
Fact: When delivered in a physician-supervised medical setting, HBOT is among the safest non-invasive medical treatments available. Serious complications are rare. Every session at our centers is overseen by trained medical staff who monitor your comfort and safety from start to finish.

Myth: HBOT causes serious side effects.
Fact: Most people respond well to HBOT. The side effects that may occur are typically mild and temporary, such as a feeling of fullness in the ears (similar to what you feel when a plane descends), brief lightheadedness, or mild fatigue. Building What Patients Couldn’t Find

Erika Jordan spent 10 years in the hyperbaric medicine sector before venturing out on her own, and now brings nearly 20 years of experience to the field. She came up through the clinical side first: DMS, EMT, then Certified Hyperbaric Specialist, the kind of background that teaches you the operational details nobody puts in a brochure. Staffing, safety checks, how a chamber actually runs on a Tuesday morning when something goes slightly wrong.

That time taught her what hyperbaric oxygen therapy could actually do. Complex wounds, radiation injury, surgical complications, trauma cases that weren’t healing on their own timeline. She watched it work for patients who’d run out of other options. What she didn’t see, at least not in Central Florida, was a place built around that kind of care that wasn’t tied to a hospital. Something private, calmer, still serious about safety but not built like a hospital wing.

So she built it. Hyperbaric Healing Treatment Center started as one location. It’s now three: Orlando, New Smyrna Beach, Leesburg. Growing wasn’t really the point for her, or not the main one. What she comes back to is simpler: patients walking in scared and walking out with some hope restored. That’s the part she calls her biggest accomplishment, not the expansion numbers.

The Standards Behind The Growth

Ask Jordan what guides her decisions and she doesn’t hesitate: safety, integrity, education, consistency, patient-centered care. Said like that it sounds like a wall plaque. In practice it means every protocol, every staff training session, every leadership call gets run through one filter first. Does this keep people safe. In hyperbaric medicine, where the stakes of getting it wrong are not abstract, that filter matters more than most.

Education sits right next to it, and for a specific reason. HBOT is still widely misunderstood, by patients, by some providers, by the public at large. When people actually understand the science behind it, the safety protocols, what it can and can’t do, they make better decisions about their own care. Jordan treats that understanding as part of the job, not an afterthought.

The harder lesson came with growth. Passion got the first location open. It doesn’t run three locations. The founding of HHTC is the milestone Jordan points to first. Opening the first location was the expected achievement. What came after surprised her more: the model scaled, the team held quality across multiple sites, and there was clearly more demand than one location could meet.

What HHTC became known for wasn’t just growth. It was the rigor underneath it: real protocols, emergency preparedness, patient monitoring that doesn’t slip. The short answer is yes. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) can be covered by Medicare and most commercial insurance plans, but coverage depends on your specific medical condition, your plan’s requirements, and whether your provider can document medical necessity.

Some insurance companies require prior authorization before they’ll cover HBOT, though Medicare does not require prior authorization if the condition meets coverage requirements. Your out-of-pocket cost will depend on your specific plan. Some patients pay only a copay, while others pay toward a deductible or coinsurance. With Medicare Part B, you typically pay 20% of the Medicare-approved amount after meeting your deductible, and in most instances, a Medicare supplement plan covers the remaining 20%. [1]

What conditions are commonly approved by insurance?

Medicare and most major commercial insurance carriers, including BlueCross BlueShield (BCBS), UnitedHealthcare, Cigna, Aetna, and Humana, will cover HBOT to treat the following conditions:

Important coverage limitations

Several covered conditions come with strict requirements. For diabetic lower-extremity wounds, Medicare requires that the patient have Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes, that the wound has reached a serious stage (specifically a deep ulcer with infection reaching the bone, joint, or deeper tissue, classified as Wagner Grade III or higher on the standard diabetic ulcer severity scale), and that the patient has already failed an adequate course of standard wound therapy before HBOT can be authorized. [1]

In addition, many plans will only continue authorizing HBOT as adjunctive therapy when the wound is reassessed every 30 days and shows measurable signs of healing. If progress isn’t documented, coverage can be discontinued, even mid-treatment course.

Are there additional conditions sometimes covered by insurance?

Yes. Beyond the standard approved list, there are a number of off-label conditions that some commercial insurance carriers will cover when medical necessity can be clearly demonstrated through clinical documentation, prior treatment records, and physician letters of support. Off-label conditions that may be covered (case-by-case) include:

What if my condition isn’t on the list?

You may still qualify for coverage. Most commercial insurance carriers will review medical records to determine medical necessity on a case-by-case basis.

For patients whose insurance ultimately doesn’t cover treatment, we also offer discounted out-of-pocket packages. 

Does Medicare cover hyperbaric oxygen therapy?

Yes. Medicare Part B covers HBOT for FDA-approved conditions, including qualifying diabetic foot wounds, osteoradionecrosis, gas gangrene, and decompression sickness. You’ll typically pay 20% of the Medicare-approved amount after your Part B deductible.

Is HBOT covered by BCBS, UnitedHealthcare, or Cigna?

Most major carriers (BCBS, UnitedHealthcare, Cigna, Aetna, Humana) cover HBOT for standard approved conditions and sometimes approve off-label conditions when medical necessity is well-documented. Requirements vary by plan.

How many HBOT sessions will insurance cover?

Most Medicare and commercial insurance guidelines approve up to 20 treatments per month (once daily) for a total of up to 60 treatments per calendar year, for conditions that meet coverage criteria. Extensions beyond this may be possible if your provider documents clinical progress and ongoing medical necessity.

What if my insurance denies coverage?

You have the right to appeal. The process moves through redetermination, independent reconsideration, and (if necessary) an administrative law judge. We can help you build the documentation for your appeal, and self-pay packages are available if your appeal is unsuccessful.

Does insurance cover HBOT for off-label conditions like long COVID, TBI, or Lyme disease?

Sometimes. Commercial insurers occasionally approve these when supported by strong clinical documentation, but approval isn’t guaranteed.

Can I use HSA or FSA funds for HBOT?

Yes. HBOT is generally an eligible HSA/FSA expense when prescribed by a physician. Check with your plan administrator for documentation requirements.

What Is an Arterial Insufficiency Ulcer?

An arterial insufficiency ulcer is an open sore that develops when poor blood flow deprives tissue of the oxygen it needs to heal. Most commonly caused by peripheral artery disease (PAD), these wounds typically appear on the lower legs, feet, or toes and are known for being intensely painful and slow, or impossible, to heal with standard care alone.

Common symptoms include:

• Persistent leg or foot pain, often worse at night
• Open wounds with defined, “punched-out” edges
• Skin that appears pale, cool, shiny, or hairless around the wound
• Wounds that show little to no healing progress over weeks or months [1]

Why are these wounds so hard to heal?

Healing depends on oxygen-rich blood reaching damaged tissue. In patients with arterial insufficiency, the delivery system is compromised. Standard wound care can treat the surface, but it can’t compensate for the oxygen deficit driving the problem. That’s exactly where HBOT comes in.

During HBOT, patients breathe 100% oxygen inside a pressurized chamber. This treatment allows oxygen to dissolve directly into the blood plasma, reaching tissue that restricted circulation can’t adequately supply. For arterial insufficiency ulcers, the key benefits include:
